The eighth season of the American animated television series Adventure Time, created by Pendleton Ward, premiered on Cartoon Network in the United States on January 23, 2017. The series is based on a short produced for Frederator's Nicktoons Network animation incubator series Random! Cartoons. The season follows the adventures of Finn, a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Along the way, they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess. The season was storyboarded and written by Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Sam Alden, Hanna K. Nyström, Graham Falk, Aleks Sennwald, Laura Knetzger, Charmaine Verhagen, Pendleton Ward, Emily Partridge, Polly Guo, Kent Osborne, and Adam Muto. The eighth season of Adventure Time features two miniseries entitled Islands and Elements. The former follows Finn, Jake, BMO (voiced by Niki Yang) and Susan Strong (voiced by Jackie Buscarino) as they leave Ooo and travel across the ocean to solve the mystery of Finn's past. The latter details what happened in Ooo while Finn et al. were away at sea. The season also featured James Baxter as a guest animator for the episode "Horse and Ball". The season debuted with the two-part episode "Two Swords"/"Do No Harm", which were collectively viewed by 0.88 million viewers. This marked a slight increase in ratings from the previous season finale, "Preboot"/"Reboot". The season was produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Frederator Studios. Several compilation DVDs that contain episodes from the season have been released.
